My name is Jose. During the day, I work as an electrical engineer and industrial factory manager, so engineering, machinery, and design have always been a major part of my life.
I have always found myself somewhere between technical structure and creative design.
My everyday work involves technical drawings, CAD software, and industrial automation. Although I enjoy the accuracy and discipline of engineering, I was also looking for a creative way to bring the beauty of technical layouts out of the digital world and onto a physical medium.
While exploring computer-aided design and digital manufacturing, I eventually discovered the world of pen plotters and mechanical writing machines. I was fascinated immediately.
Seeing a machine convert digital vector paths into real ink on paper was completely different from ordinary digital printing. The physical lines had texture and character, while the machine delivered an almost mesmerizing level of precision.
That experience became the starting point for my journey into Pen Plotter Art.
I began to see an opportunity to combine engineering, design, and physical drawing in a way that could appeal to automotive enthusiasts, architects, and people who appreciate technical artwork. The idea was to create work that brought together technology and the appearance of hand-drawn technical design.
That vision eventually became Cartesia Studio.
The First Dollar: Breaking the Ice

Launching an Etsy shop is always a step into the unknown. There are hours of machine calibration, vector testing, and listing preparation involved, all while hoping that someone else will connect with the work as much as you do.
I still remember the moment I received the notification for my very first Etsy sale.
A customer had discovered my shop and purchased a custom technical blueprint print.
The moment brought together excitement, validation, and a sudden sense of responsibility.
Someone had actually decided to pay for something I had created.
I remember preparing that first order extremely carefully. I checked the ink lines under the light and then carefully rolled the finished print so it could arrive in pristine condition.
That first dollar changed the way I viewed Cartesia Studio. It showed me that what had started as a hobby could become a real and viable business.
Finding Our Niche: Automotive and Racetrack Blueprints

Our breakthrough came after deciding to concentrate on Custom Technical Blueprint Art, particularly high-end automotive and racetrack blueprints.
Car enthusiasts often have a deep emotional connection to their vehicles, along with strong feelings of passion and nostalgia. Rather than looking for inexpensive, mass-produced posters, they want artwork that feels closer to an authentic engineering draft.
This became the foundation for our Automotive Blueprint Art.
One of our most successful product lines has focused on custom historical racetrack layouts. A recent example is our work featuring the iconic Silverstone Circuit, where we mapped different historical eras of the track using color-coded technical markers.
To create a premium finished product, we combined heavy, acid-free Fabriano paper with crisp archival pigment inks. The result was artwork designed to speak directly to collectors and garage owners around the world.
The Failures: Learning the Hard Way
Of course, learning the craft of pen plotting also means dealing with ruined paper, spilled ink, and unexpected mistakes.
Plotting is an unforgiving process. Even a single mistake when a design is 99% complete can mean throwing away the print and starting again.
Throughout my journey, I experienced plenty of what I would call plotting disasters.
The Smudge Catastrophe: Early in the process, I underestimated how long high-flow pigment ink needed to dry on textured paper. After finishing a detailed print, I eagerly lifted it from the board. Unfortunately, my thumb dragged across the artwork and left a thick black smear across an otherwise beautifully detailed chassis layout.
The Paper War: I also experimented with inexpensive, standard paper stock. The result was not what I expected. Under the heavy ink coverage required for complex technical hatching, the paper warped, buckled, and bled. It was a difficult lesson that taught me not to compromise on premium paper such as Fabriano.
Speed vs. Precision: On another occasion, I was trying to complete an order quickly and set the plotter speed too high. The pen started skipping and vibrating heavily when moving through tight curves. What should have been a precise sports car outline became a jagged and shaky mess.
Each of these experiences reinforced the same lesson: pen plotting cannot be rushed.
The process requires patience, careful calibration, and respect for the medium.
The #1 Lesson for Beginners
If I could give someone starting out today just one piece of advice, it would be simple:
Focus on quality and value your craft.
Don't try to compete simply by offering the lowest price. Your time, engineering skills, and the wear and tear placed on your machine all have real value.
Use the best paper you can find. Test your ink flow repeatedly. And don't hesitate to establish a clear custom-order process, such as requiring a confirmed purchase before spending hours creating digital drafts.
When you respect your own work, your clients are more likely to respect it as well.
